Marilyn Franklin

I am proud to be a native of Detroit, although I have lived in various parts of the country including New York City, San Diego, and Las Vegas. I attended New York University as an undergraduate and obtained my Master's degree in Social Work at CUNY Hunter College prior to returning to Detroit to enter the clinical psychology graduate program at Wayne State University. I entered the field of psychology with the hope of conducting research and developing interventions geared towards improving mental health among low-income underserved youth living in urban settings such as Detroit. This commitment has driven my educational path and career trajectory. It is important to me to help prepare the next generation of psychologists to serve diverse populations, particularly those that are underserved. Through both clinical and research efforts, I hope to make a positive impact on the mental health of youth and the training of future psychologists.

Research interest(s)/area of expertise

My research interests are related to mental health issues among high-risk, high-need ethnic minority youth living in underserved urban areas with behavioral health professional shortages. This includes topics such as disparities in mental health service utilization, stigmatization of mental health treatment, and evidence-based interventions developed specifically for this population. As a clinical professor and psychology clinic director, I am primarily focused on training graduate students in our internal psychology clinic practicum serving clients from the WSU campus and Detroit community. I provide clinical supervision of assessment and therapy cases and teach three graduate level courses in the department of psychology. Further, I am responsible for obtaining ongoing funding and directing clinical training at an external practicum site at Children's Hospital of Michigan in an outpatient primary care clinic and school-based health center. Finally, I am the Project Director on a HRSA funded Graduate Professional Education grant that provides interdisciplinary training to doctoral level psychology students in integrated behavioral health service delivery in community based settings including Children's Hospital and Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan.
